Portland Guardian - Friday 19 January 1912, Page 2. DEATH OF HEYWOOD PIONEER - A very old pioneer and resident of Heywood. Mr. Peter Turley, died on Sunday last (14 Jan 1912). Mr. Turley, who was born at sea, landed in Tasmania 78 years ago. When 12 years of age, he came over from there with his father, and landed in Portland. Mr. Turley then joined the survey party under the late Mr. Lindsay Clarke, and was the last surviving member of that party. He helped to survey a large number of towns in the Western district, including Heywood, Casterton, Balmoral, Dunkeld, etc. , and also helped to layout the plan of the cemetery in which he was buried. Mr. Turley, in company with three others, then went to the diggings in Bendigo at the age of 18, later returning to Heywood with a team of bullocks, where he spent the later part of his life. Mr. Turley, who was married in 1860, leaves a widow and a grown up family of eight boys and three girls, for whom the greatest sympathy is felt.
His main occupation is listed as a farmer.
Parents shown on Death Record as Susannah Hope and Abraham Turley.
