Douglas was born in 1925, the eldest son of Kenneth Turnbull and Grace Coase. He trained as an aerospace engineer with DeHavilands in Hatfield, Hertfordshire. He married Mary Paula Sperring 10 April 1950 in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire. He later emigrated to the USA to work for Lockheed in Georgia and California and finished out his career with McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis. He died 9 July 2017 in Marietta, Georgia and is buried at Honey Creek Woodlands in Conyers, Georgia.
