William was born in Ballybrittas, Queen's County, Ireland, in 1871 to John Tynan and Bridget Keegan.[1]

In 1889 William emigrated to Mackay in the Colony of Queensland with a John Tynan, on board the mail ship Taroba.[2]

At 25 years of age William married another Irish immigrant, Hannah Enright, on 21 April 1897 in the Catholic Church at Mackay, Queensland.[3] Their children were:

William was murdered by his brother Peter Tynan and nephew John Farrington over an argument involving alleged missing beer, after Peter accused William's wife Hannah of taking it; an allegation Hannah denied.[4][5][6]

At the trial, Martin Farrington testified that William Tynan was his uncle, John Farrington was his brother, and Peter Tynan's wife was his sister.[7]

William was interred in the Mackay Cemetery.[8] His killers were originally sentenced to death,[9] which was commuted to life in prison.[10]
