Biography
Mary (Udy) Braund was born in Cornwall, England.
Family
Mary Udy is Likely to be the one baptised at Quethiock on 11 Oct 1745, daughter of Richard and Joan Udy. [1]
Mary goes on to name 2 of her own children Richard and Joan, so this seems quite probable.
Siblings
Mary was one of at least 3 children born to Richard and Joan Udy at Quethiock. [2] The children are as follows:
Catherine baptised in 1744
Mary baptised in 1745
John baptised in 1747.
Parents
Father Richard Udy married Joan Smith at Quethiock on 16 Apr 1744. [3] These records are very terse and there are no further details.
Marriage
James Braund married Mary Udy at Quethiock on 27th November 1766. The couple were both of this parish and married by banns. They could both sign their names. Witnesses were Saml. Braund and Jno. Hawkins. [4]
Children
There were at least 9 children born to James and Mary. The children are as follows:
John 1768
John 1769
Joan 1771
James 1774
Samuel 1776
Jane 1779
Mary 1782
Richard 1786
Betty 1788
Apart from the last 2 children, they were baptised at Quethiock. There are no details about residence or father's occupation. [5] Richard and Betty were baptised at Menheniot. Again the registers contain nothing further. [6]
Death
Mary died in 1823 at the age of 78. She was buried at Quethiock on the 23rd December 1823. She had been living at Church Town in the parish. [7]
Research Notes
The original poster gave a birth date of 2 May 1746. This matches a baptism for a Mary Udy at Luxulyan, daughter of Nicholas and Elizabeth Udy. This seems unlikely for many reasons. There are several possible other candidates named Mary Udy not to mention several more with a known variant surname of Eddy or Edy. I'm not sure what information the original poster had for deciding which Mary Udy was the correct one. However, Nicholas Udy died intestate in 1781 and his wife Elizabeth waived her right to administer the estate leaving her daughter Catherine the wife of Thomas Lukey to do the job. There is no mention of a daughter named Mary, wife of James Braund. [8] It seems much more likely this Mary Udy is the one baptised at Quethiock on 11 Oct 1745, the daughter of Richard and Joan. [9]
