Biography

Catherine was baptised November 12, 1797 in Stratton, the daughter of George Uglow and Mary Couch. ^[1]

She married John Pope, mariner, on March 20, 1818 at St Charles the Martyr in Plymouth, Devon. They both signed the parish register and witnesses were Mary Uglow and __?__orne.^[2]

John was a lay Wesleyan Methodist missionary and they went out America in 1818, living in Prince Edward Island until about 1823 when they went to the West Indies, living in St. Vincent for a couple of years before returning to Plymouth, Devon where John took over the family shipping business after the death of his brother Thomas.

John Pope died April 17, 1864 in Plymouth, Devon and was buried at the old Ebenezer Methodist Burying Ground in Plymouth, Devon but that no longer seems to exist as it was originally.

Burial Location for Catherine

Catherine's grave has been located at Duke Street Cemetery in Southport, Lancashire and unfortunately it states her date of birth as Oct 30, 1798 rather than 1797 but that is only as good as the memory of the person ordering the engraving on her headstone.^[3]

**Unfortunately someone gave an incorrect YEAR of birth on her gravestone -- it was actually Oct 30, 1797 rather than 1798 since she was baptised Nov 12, 1797.
