Carl's obituary in the Sparta Plaindealer read as follows:
Carl Henry Ulrich, 67, died suddenly at his home in Tilden Monday. He had not been in ill health and was getting ready to report for work at the Neil Service Station when he fell to the floor and died. Funeral services were conducted at the United Presbyterian Church in Tilden Wednesday afternoon and burial was made in the Tilden Cemetery.
Born in St. Clair county in 1890, Mr. Ulrich had lived in the Tilden area about 55 years. He is survived by a brother, Neil, and four sisters, Mrs Bertha Mathews, Mrs. Frieda Fulton, Mrs. Effie Lindsay and Miss Susie Ulrich all of Tilden.
"I, Mark Smith, copied these notes from the notebook kept by Effie Nettie Ulrich (my grandmother) for the Born, Died and Buried dates in the Biography section above and some of the notes. Mark Smith, Hampton, NH obtained this notebook 23 MAR 2015."
The following 1910 census states that he worked as a miner in a coal mine.
