Biography

Temperence was the wife of William Loveridge. They came together as a family, with their children, to Maryland, Colony of British America in 1664. They eventually settled down in Albany, Albany, New York. They lived next to the Albany courthouse. They also owned land in Catskill, Green County, New York; however, Temperence did not visit there because she was mostly blind and deaf toward the end of her life.

On July 18, 1657 they were living in Poole, Dorsetshire, England. On this day, they baptized their three year old daughter Temperance in Poole. According to William Loveridge's will, their daughter Hannah was born before Temperence. Hannah was born about 1652 in Wool or Poole, Dorsetshire, England. There is a record for a Anna Loveridge being baptized in 1647. Some researchers have speculated that Hannah and Anna are the same person; but otherwise, Anna may have passed away since she was not listed in William's Will.

Some family members have added her maiden name as "Moor/Moore", based on a record of a Temperance Moor coming into Maryland with her parents and siblings. However, Temperance Loveridge was still in England at the time that Temperance Moore came into America with her parents. Furthermore, when Temperence did come to America, she came with her husband and children, and her name had changed from the maiden name of her birth, to her married name of Loveridge. Therefore, these two Temperance's are separate people and do not represent the same person.

On the Church of England Parish records of William and Temperance's marriage, her maiden name was not listed or was indecipherable.

After her husband's death, she relinquished her executrix rights over his Will to her son, because her health was failing her. Also, according to her husband's Will, he wished for her to move into the home of one of their daughters. Because she was mostly blind and deaf, this would have been very imperative for her well being. Temperence passed away soon after her husband did.

William was in Albany when he wrote his Will, and his health was failing him. At that time, he would not have likely traveled to Catskill. He did own that land, but their main home was in Albany where he worked as a Hatter. According to court records, their home was next to the courthouse. Furthermore, it specifically states in a court proceeding, that Temperence did not travel to Catskill. Based on the fact that he was in Albany when he wrote his Will, he was sick, and his wife was unable to travel, he died in Albany. At the time of William's death, there was a Dutch community church cemetery not far from the courthouse. He is believed to be buried there because he lived near there and because he was a very popular Hatter and citizen in the Dutch community.
