Nothing is known of Elizabeth, wife of Nicholas Utter, other than her first name and that she was presumably living at the time his will was proved in 1722.
There is absolutely no evidence to support the claim that her last name at birth was Tefft. A younger, unmarried "Elizabeth Tift" signed Nicholas Utter's will as a witness; nothing suggests she was related to his wife.
Because Nicholas' will also names his "daughter-in-law" Eleanor, and because "-in-law" at that time most often meant "step-", it is thought that Eleanor was Elizabeth's daughter from an unknown prior marriage and that Elizabeth was a widow when she married Nicholas on an unknown date. The rest of Nicholas' children are attributed to his unknown first wife.[1]
Elizabeth's origin and birth/death dates are not known. She died sometime after 1722 when her husband Nicholas Utter named her in his will.
