Biography

Mary was born in Scotland about 1640-1642 and came to America Aberdeen, Scotland to Newport, Newport, RI before 1671. She bought property in Portsmouth, RI The deed is recorded in the Rhode Island State Archives and is dated 1671. [1]

One source (Angie Strzelecki, author of the Akin Ancestors Newsletter) states that Mary and her three children, came to America on a ship that sailed from Aberdeen Scotland to Newport County, Rhode Island before 1676. Angie claims to have a source for this.

Children: [1]

  1. John, b. 1664
  2. James, b. 1667
  3. David, b. 1669

She passed away about 1672-675.

Research Notes

If the information above is accurate, Mary and her three children would have had to have come between 1669 (when David was born) and 1671 when she signed the deed for land.

A genealogist hired in Scotland, Diane Baptie, wrote: "The reference in Donald Whyte's book 'A dictionary of emigrants to the USA' reads: 'Mrs. Mary Akin, From Aberdeen to Newport, Rhode Island before 1676; issue: John born 1663; David born 1664; James born 1668.' His source is given as 'Letters to the editor regarding Scottish emigrants - Scottish Genealogical Library, 4th January 1963'. In other words, this entry does not rely on an original source but has been apparently sent by a correspondent to Donald Whyte almost certainly from America. Aberdeen could mean either the burgh or county of Aberdeen." As a result, the idea that Mary traveled to America with her three sons is questionable since the source was a letter from America.

A deed in the Rhode Island Archives documents that David Akin owned land in Rhode Island as early as 1662. Did he then return to Scotland to sire John and his brothers in 1664 - 1669? Or is it possible that the sons of David and Mary Akin were actually born in America? There is no really good documentation either way on this, but some students of this family are beginning to make this conclusion including Daphne Brownell who wrote Ancestors and Descendants
