Biography

Birth

It is not known exactly when or where Margaretha was born or baptized or what her family name at birth was. A birth date of about 1645 is estimated from the following facts:

• both Margaretha^[1] and her husband Christoph^[2] died in December of 1717 in Hayna.
• Margaretha's death record states that they had been married for 53 years, so they were married around 1664.^[1]
• the average age at first marriage in the 17th century in Western Europe was in the mid to late 20's for both men and women.

Marriage

Her death record says Margaretha, the wife of Christoph Winstel, died on 18 Dec 1717 and that they were married in Hayna and lived together in marriage for 53 years.^[1] Thus they were married about 1664.

Marriage Research Note

At least one unsourced genealogy reports Christoph's wife's name as Magdalena Hodel (1641-1714, born and died in Switzerland). However, this information is totally inconsistent with the actual death records of Christoph and his wife which have been found. It is also inconsistent with other genealogies which say that Magdalena Hodel (1641-1714) lived in Switzerland and married Joannes Jaeger.^[3]

Children

Primary source documents have been located for the birth of two of Christoph and Margaretha's children which document the parental relationship.

• Johann Bernhard Winstel's christening record from March 1682 appears in the church records for Herxheim bie Landau.^[4] He was likely born in Hayna as Hayna was part of the Herxheim church parish at that time.
• Maria Margaretha Winstel, daughter of Christoph Winstel and his wife Margaretha, was christened at Hayna on 14 Aug 1683.^[5][6]

Many genealogies show other children for Christoph and Margaretha as well. The existence of these people can be documented, but contemporaneous records showing their parentage have not been found so far.
