Eliza Bannell (aka Bannall, Bannel, Bannal) was born in 1849 in Grimston, Norfolk, England to Ann Bannell. Her birth was registered in Freebridge Lynn, Norfolk in the last quarter of the year, with no mother's maiden name (indicating an unmarried mother).[1]
Eliza Bannall, daughter of Ann, was christened on 7 Jul 1850 at St Botolph's in Grimston.[2]
In 1851 Eliza Bannell (age 1) lived in Grimstone with her grandfather Jacob (45, Ag Labr), grandmother Mary A (43), and five aunts & uncles: Elizabeth (16, Labr), Sarah Ann (11, Scholar), Mary Ann (9, Scholar), Maria (6, Scholar), William (2), as well as cousin Robert Bannell (8, Scholar).[3] Eliza's mother, Ann (23, House Servant), lived in the household of her employer in Hillington, Norfolk.
Eliza's mother married William Casburn in 1857. Eliza used her stepfather's surname on the 1861 census.
In 1861 Eliza Casburn (age 11, Scholar) lived in Grimstone with her stepfather William (31, Shoemaker Master), mother Ann (32, Washwoman), and two half-sisters: Anna Maria (3, Scholar) and Mary Ann (0).[4]
Eliza Bannell (age 14) sailed aboard the ship Shackamaxon which arrived at the quarantine station in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia on 3 Sep 1863 - her native place was Norfolk, England; her parents were onboard the ship; her religious denomination was C.E.; she could both read & write; she had a relative in Australia: her uncle, William Day, of Parramatta.[5] Eliza was listed with "single females" and according to the record her parents were onboard, but her mother and stepfather remained in England all their lives. Perhaps she travelled with other relatives.
Eliza Bannell married George Forster in 1869 in Hartley district, New South Wales.[6]
Eliza already had one daughter, born out of wedlock:
Eliza and George had other children, possibly all or maybe just some of the following (these are all the Forster births in NSW with father's name George and mother's name Eliza in the right time period):
Eliza Forster passed away in 1922 in Redfern district, New South Wales - her death registration incorrectly lists her parents as William & Eliza (perhaps the informant knew her stepfather's name was William, but forgot her mother's name - presumably none of Eliza's children would have met her parents since they remained in England).[7]
She is buried at Rookwood General Cemetery in Rookwood, New South Wales: "In loving memory of our dear mother ELIZA FORSTER, died 18th Dec 1922, aged 73 years."[8]
