Disputed Surname

There is no evidence of Mary's birth surname,[1] despite some family trees and publications referring to it as Jarvis. To the contrary, Seversmith, the author of Colonial families of Long Island, New York and Connecticut, maintains "sincerely and categorically" that she was not the daughter of Stephen Jarvis.[2]

Biography

Mary was born about 1625. She married John Green about 1650 in Stamford, Connecticut. Their children were John Green and Joseph Green. She passed away on 14 November, 1657 in Stamford, Connecticut followed with burial at the Stamford Burying Ground in Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut.

The circumstances of her marriage to John Green are unknown. The couple lived in the New Haven Colony and had three known children:[3]

  • John b ca 1651[4]
  • Joseph; m Elizabeth __
  • Benjamin; m (1) Susan Roberts (2) Hester Clements (3) Mary Holmes

Mary Green died at Stamford on November 14, 1678.[5]

Research Notes

The origins of Mercy or Mary Jarvis are smokey. In Colonial families of Long Island, New York and Connecticut : being the ancestry & kindred of Herbert Furman Seversmith, the author says that there are some accounts that attempt to link Mercy Jarvis Green to Stephen Jarvis of Huntingdon, Long Island, but insists that these threads are erroneous. The birth dates seem to agree with him. I believe it is possible that she is related, but not as a daughter. There is a faint hope that she was connected to a merchant John Jarvis of Boston who appears around 1648 and has a will listed in 1656 according to Anderson in the GMB. She is clearly a Jarvis, as this is the one thing upon which people can agree.

Nothing is known about the origins of Mary, the first wife of John Green. Her birth year is estimated based upon the presumed marriage date and her birth location is likely in England.

Mercy or Mary was married to John Green in about 1650-51. She was the mother of John's first two sons, John and Joseph. Both sons recorded to have been born in Stamford. She died in 1657 in Stamford, Connecticut. Her church record is associated with the name "Mary".

With much respect, I dispute that her maiden last name positively is not Jarvis. I read the text provided and while Mr. Seversmith does make a compelling argument that Mercy is not the daughter of Stephen Jarvis, he does not dispute that Jarvis was her maiden name. It is possible that Mercy/Mary is a Jarvis from another family entirely, although with the estimated birth dates, I feel she could be a sister or cousin to Stephen Jarvis. There was more than 1 Jarvis family in America by then.

All we have confirmed is that she is married by the time she and John appear in the records at Stamford. Sadly, the record keeping of females in the colonies by the ruling classes are poor at best, and she did not outlive her husband and leave a will.

Jarvis-6291 and Unknown-532576 appear to represent the same person because: I created Jarvis-6291 after not being able to locate a profile for the mother of Joseph Green Green-5688. This is clearly wrong. I have already connected John to his son.
