Biography

Anna, whose last name at birth is unknown, was reportedly born in Manchester, England[1] around 1822, although her death record indicates she may have been born as early as 1813.[2] Anna married Henry Harrison, probably in Chicago, Illinois, sometime before 1839 (year of birth of eldest known child). They had six children in Chicago, before moving to California around 1852, when the family appeared in the California state census in Sacramento.[3]

The relationship between Anna and her husband may not have been a happy one. (source: newspaper item about fight--to be added ASAP).

Henry died intestate on 22 December 1854 and Anna was appointed administratrix of his estate.[4] There was a dispute over a sum of money held in a local bank, in which the holder of the certificate stated that Harrison had enjoined him not to allow his wife to touch the money. The estate was not finally settled until 1923.

On 13 January 1855 Anna was married to "Dr." Benjamin Sanders,[5] who had been one of the appraisers of her husband's estate. The marriage took place at the First Church of Christ in Sacramento, J.A. Benton, pastor, officiating.[6]

Anna died from cancer of the mouth on 26 June 1878 in Sacramento. She was under the care of Dr. G.L. Simmons and was buried in the Sacramento city cemetery in lot 303.[7] A notice appeared in the Sacramento Daily Union two days later:[8]
