A useful citizen, a true friend and a young man of promise is gone. WILLIAM A. UTTERBACK, of the firm of C. R. Whitehead & Co., passed from this life on Friday, Aug. 28, 1874, aged twenty-three years. He was born in Boone county, Kentucky. About four years since he came here on a visit to his uncle, Mr. Willhoit, and soon after went into business. In the past year Mr. Utterback suffered much from ill health. Recovering from a severe attack of sickness in the early part of the present summer, he went to Kentucky. Regaining some little of his old strength and buoyancy, he returned to Shelby and decided on a western trip in search of health. A few weeks since in company with Henry Miles, deceased embarked in a journey of doubt and hope, making short rides by rail until Denver was reached. There Mr. Utterback received a hearty welcome and the best care and assiduous attention at the home of our former citizen, Mr. J. H. Grout. Too late. The light in life's temple gave no promise of returning vitality in the change of air and scenery; and on Friday last it went out altogether, leaving a painless body and universal regret. The remains of deceased, in charge of Mr. Miles, arrived on the Sunday night train, and on Monday, at the conclusion of appropriate ceremonies, were interred in the cemetery.
