Biography

Daughter of Peter Vanderbilt and Mary Everitt. Marriage of Phebe Elizabeth Van Der Bilt of LaGrange [Dutchess Co] to Philip B Van Der Bilt of Fishkill on 5 Nov 1840 reported in 21 Nov 1840 issue [vol XI no 538] of the Christian Intelligencer of the Reformed Dutch Church. Her younger brother George Vanderbilt [George Whitefield Vanderbilt born 23 Dec 1820] lived with them in Wappinger, Dutchess Co NY [June 1880 census]. Philip and Phebe had one son, John Platt Vanderbilt, and three daughters: Sarah, Mary and Laura. After Philip died, Phebe moved to Poughkeepsie about 1887 and is in the 105 Garden Street household of her daughter Laura Cantine in the 5 June 1900 census of Poughkeepsie, Dutchess Co. NY. Laura hosted a celebration of Phebe's 90th birthday in March 1907 - the oldest daughter is listed as Sarah Williams of Florida, also one surviving sister of Phebe, Mrs. Edwin Townsend of California [Jemina Vanderbilt Townsend b June 1828, died San Gabriel, Los Angeles Co CA 17 March 1909. Edwin Robinson Townsend b 23 Nov 1821 Dutchess Co NY, m. Mar 1848 Dutchess Co NY, d 6 Nov 1907 Alameda Co CA]. After Phebe's death, Laura sold the property at 105 Garden Street, Poughkeepsie, deed dated 9 Dec 1907.
