Algernon Morgan. Vandiver [1][2][3][4][5]
was born in 1825 OR 1826 in Hampshire County, Virginia (now West Virginia) though some sources say Fauquier County, Virginia, Missouri and Kentucky, and he is a year older in the 1860 census[6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]
On 10 AUG 1860 during the 1860 Census, he lived in Fabius Twp., Knox County, Missouri and was a farmer[14]
Algernon married Virginia Rachel Buchanan on 07 APR 1853 in Shelby County, Missouri by Rev. William M. Rush, at the Methodist Episcopal Church South, though some Vandivers say 3 Apr 1853[15][16][17]
He married Hester Ann Short on 05 DEC 1861 in Shelby County, Missouri by Denison Meason, Minister of the Gospel[21][22]
On 2 AUG 1864 in Shelbyville, Black Creek Twp., Shelby County, Missouri he enlisted for 1 year as a private, and mustered into Co. G, 39th MissouriInfantry 8 Sep 1864 at Hannibal, Missouri on 22 AUG 1864. His enlistment papers reported blue eyes, dark hair, sandy complexion, 5' 7½"
He was killed in on 27 SEP 1864 in Centralia, Boone and Audrain Counties, Missouri at the Battle of Centralia, Missouri while fighting with Co. G, 39th Missouri Infantry[23][24]
He is buried in Centralia, Boone County, Missouri where a monument reads:

the unidentifiable bodies were removed in 1873 to Jefferson City National Cemetery, Sec. 7, row 1, #15, where a monument reads,
"The remains of Companys A, G and H 39th Regiment Missouri Volunteer Infantry who were killed in action at Centralia, Missouri 27 September 1864"
and on the north side, amongst the 119 men named, is found,
"Prt. AlgernonM. Vandiver Co. G."[25][26]
