The earliest record of the Vandusens was dated 1196. The Name was spelt Van Deursen, but records show a change of spelling in 1756.

The Van Deursens were the equivalent of English Feudal Lords, they were Lords of Deursen and Lissel in the Province of Brabant.

The earliest record of an ancestor coming to America was 1630. He was Abraham Pieterson, son of Henderick Van Duerson. Chief Magistrate of Haarlem in Holland, Province of the Netherlands.

The earliest record on one coming to Canada, Was Jacob Vandusen, born in Duchess County, N.Y. in 1756. He married Mary French in 1780. Family tradition has it, that Jacob joined the American Army at the time of the American Revolution, but then changed his mind and came to Canada. He was a yeoman / farmer and settled at Smith Falls, Ontario. (This would be area now known as Smiths' Falls)

There were nine children of this union. The eldest born in 1782. The youngest October 2,1805. This one became lost in the woods October 26,1810 and was never found. Of this family Benjamin, born May 1,1830 married Mary Dwyer Whyte in 1854. They had eight children between the years 1855-1873.

John Vandusen, son of Benjamin and Mary Dwyer Whyte was born at Arnprior, Ontario, October 9th,1861. He came West to the Belleview, Manitoba - Canada district in 1888. Two years later he married Mary Lorena Hodgins. She was born 1869 in Shawville, Quebec. She came west with her parents, Richard and Fanny Hodgins and married John Vandusen in 1900 at Brandon, Manitoba - Canada. Two years later they moved to the Whitewater district and farmed 35-5-23 until 1939, when they retired to Hartney.

In 1916 while the family were away on a visit to Ontario, their home was destroyed by fire. They lost everything in that fire, but hardy pioneers that they were, took up the challenge, rebuilt their home and carried on. During their life time they saw many changes in farm life and modes of transportation. From steam engines to self-propelled machinery, from horses to automobiles, candles and coal oil lamps to electricity.

They were very much involved in community life and church work being members of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church. John passed away February 13,1942 and his wife Lorena on December 24,1945. They left a family of five sons and one daughter.

Ernest was born October 1st, 1901 and married Winnifred Flay at Clearwater, Manitoba - Canada on June 30, 1931. They farmed W1/2 20-5-23 in the Melgund district until retiring to Hartney in 1970. Ernest passed away June 26, 1979. They had two children, John and Norma.

John William was born November 21st, 1933, attending Melgund and Hartney schools. He presently farms 20-5-23. He is a contractor by trade.

Norma Jean was born April 15th, 1947, and received her education at Melgund and Hartney. She graduated as and X-ray and Lab Technician. She was married in the Presbyterian Church, Hartney, June 19,1971 to Karneilous Plantinga of Brandon. They now reside near Rivers, Manitoba - Canada. Norma continues her work in the Lab of Riverdale District Hospital.

Lawrence (Lornie) born January 14, 1904. He farmed in the Pierson district until enlisting in the R.C.A.F. in 1941, going overseas as an aero mechanic. On returning, he made his home in Drumheller, Alberta. Lornie passed away March 4th,1970.

Herman born April 22nd, 1905, has farmed with his brothers, and lives on the home farm.

Kathleen, born February 24, 1907. She was organist at the Presbyterian Church for several years. She married G. James MacDonald and resided in Hartney until 1974 when they moved to Brandon. Kay and Jim had one daughter and three sons.

Donna Marlene married John Morgan, lives at St. Albert, Alberta.

James Gregg married, lives in Toronto, Ontario.

Vann Darwin lives at Victoria, B.C.


Russell born March 7th 1910. He attended Whitewater school and farmed with his brothers until 1946, when he married Isabel Duchesneau. They farmed in the Whitewater district until April 1968, when they retired to Hartney. Isabel taught school at Elgin, Cavell, Whitewater and Hartney.

Gordon, born November 7, 1914, was educated at Whitewater School and Hartney. He enlisted in 1943 with the B.C. Dragoons Tank Regiment. He farms with his brother on 35-5-23. He is married to Edith Briggs and they had one daughter Margaret Ann who was born 1951. She married John Richard Duncan in St. Mary;s Cathedral, Winnipeg. They reside in Winnipeg and have one son Richard Gordon, born March 26, 1979.
