Biography

Joseph was born on August 22, 1801, the son of Benjamin Vaughan Sr. and Margaret "Annie" Ladd. He was part of the Quaker church during his childhood but was noted as "disowned" on November 8, 1821, though it is not clear why. No mention of him has been found in the Quaker Monthly Meeting notes after this time.[1]

It appears that Joseph had legal training as he acts as attorney for several Revolutionary War pensioners during 1824.[2]

Joseph married Catherine S. Boxley on October 12, 1829 in Louisa County, Virginia.[3] They settle in Hanover County, Virginia, and their first son Benjamin Franklin Vaughan is born on December 19, 1830 (which also happens to be the 21st birthday of his mother Catherine).

In 1830, Joseph is shown in Hanover County. In the household, there is one white female in her 20's (Catherine) as well as 8 slaves and one free person of color.[4]

In 1833 Joseph Vaughan appears as a surveyor and owner of at least one storefront property, as he hires a man, Wm F. Baugham, as storekeeper during 1833.[2]

In 1840 Joseph and his wife and 8 children are living in Hanover County. Joseph held 14 slaves.[5]

By 1846, Joseph is in partnership with Claiborne Rice Mason, and they purchase 1/2 acre lot (784 Broad Street) in Richmond Virginia that includes the Swan Tavern as well as another section (789 Broad Street) with stables for the tavern. They do not appear to run the tavern themselves, but to rent it out, as there is a legal agreement in 1848 regarding the tenant at that time.[2] (A side note to this is that the Swan Tavern was apparently one of the last places that Edgar Allen Poe stayed prior to his death in Baltimore, Maryland on October 9, 1849.)[6][7]

Joseph dies on September 18th, 1849 in Hanover, Virginia.[8] In his will he left all of his property to his wife, Catherine S. (Boxley) Vaughan.
