Jane was born in 1845. She is the daughter of Joseph Vaughan and Elvira Hill.

In the 1850 United States Federal Census James Vaughan 38 born abt 1812 in Kentucky, farmer, was head of his household in District 23, Cooper, Missouri, USA. Real Estate: 300. Other Household Members were Charity Vaughan 28 Kentucky, and the children all born in Missouri, James Vaughan 13, Joseph Vaughan 11, Martha Vaughan 9, Catharine Vaughan 7, Greenbury Vaughan 5, Sarah Vaughan 4, Phebe Vaughan 2, and Winifred Vaughan 6/12. Other neighbouring Vaughans were Joseph Vaughan 75 born Kentucky, Real estate 300, wife Elvira Vaughan 31 Kentucky, Jerusha Vaughan 14 Elizabeth Vaughan 13 Phebe Vaughan 10 Jane A Vaughan 7 Ann Celina Vaughan 7 Jane [?Irene] [possibly James?] Vaughan 5 Letty Vaughan 3 all born Missouri.
