Biography

William was born before 1782. He is the son of James Vaughan and Mary Jeter. He married first to Martha Chappel, Dau. of John Chappell on 17 Mar 1813. She d. before 1834. He then m. Mason J. _____, b. 1805.

Obedience Craddock, Sarah Lockett, Richard Craddock, Asa C. Craddock, Clayborn Craddock, Robert Craddock ( descendants of Elizabeth Craddock sister to John Hill), James Vaughan, Francis Vaughan & John Mitchell (descendants of Ann Vaughan sister to John Hill and the defendant James Hill (brother to John Hill) are the legal heirs of John Hill, dec’d.. Amelia County, Virginia Chancery Case 1807-015. Francis Vaughan vs. Admx of James Vaughan, Burton, Hasskins & Mitchell. Petition. In 1793 Francis, son of James Vaughan became his overseer at a verbal agreement to be paid 30£ per year. He took care of James Vaughan in 1793 and 1794. James Vaughan later died. Answer of Mary dated 25 July 1805. Deposition of Joshua Chaffin 8 Jan 1806. Deposition of Wilks Vaughan: James said none of the children by his first wife should be given anything except for Francis. A slave should be given Francis as his proportion of his grandfather Hill’s estate. Deposition of William Burton 15 Jan 1806: Milton Vaughan, agent for the Administratrix. Deposition of John Mitchell dated 15 Jan 1806: mentions division of the estate of Ann Vaughan, wife of James. Francis, then a minor had objected. All were of age except Wilkes Vaughan and Francis Vaughan. All agreed to the division except Francis. Will of James Vaughan: life estate to Mary, daughter Obedience Mitchell, and children James, Wilkes, Francis and Nancy Haskins have been provided for in their grandfather Hill’s estate and shall not receive anything. Sons Milton, Billy, and Thomas, and daughter Matilda under age 21. Mentions Thomas Jeter, grandfather of the younger children. Bennett Brown soles executor. Witnesses: William Burton & Bennett Brown. 18 Oct 1801. Proved 28 Jul 1803. Bennett Brown had since died and Mary Vaughan was granted letters of administration with will annexed. Francis Vaughan turned 21 on 12 May 1792. [24]

Amelia County, Virginia Chancery Case 1837-008. Heirs of George Chappell vs. Gdn(s) of Elizabeth T Chappell &C by Et al. Case only contains Petition and answer. 1834 Petition. Elizabeth T. Chappell, William H. Chappell, Richard G. Chappell, Charles E. Chappell, Elizabeth C. Chappell, & Joel Leath & his wife Louisa Jane. formerly Louisa Jane Vaughan. George Chappell, son of Elizabeth T. Chappell, and brother of [Chappell Plaintiffs] and uncle of the half blood of Louisa Jane Vaughan died intestate under age 21 with title to slaves from his father’s estate. Defendant is James Chappell (also a sibling) was guardian of George Chappell now dec’d. Hyram T. Chappell & John A. Chappell, minors are also siblings. Elizabeth F. Vaughan [During the case, “Frances” Vaughan m. B.S. Waddell], Virginia A. Vaughan, John W. Vaughan and James C. Vaughan and the said Louisa Jane Leath are children of Patsey Vaughan, dec’d who was sister of the half blood of said George Chappell. Consent order for distribution. [25]

Amelia County, Virginia Chancery Case 1838-037. Heir(s) of John Chappell vs. Exr of John Chappell &C by Et al. Paraphrased: Father John Chappell m. to Elizabeth C. Chappell. 279 acres. Eight children. Richard G. Chappell, William H. Chappell, Charles E. Chappell, Elizabeth E. Chappell, James Chappell, John A.Chappell, Hyram T. Chappell,George C, Chappell. John died. Then George C. died. Each of the children will split real estate into 1/7 shares. Personal Property will go 2/17 to mother; 2/17 to each of seven surviving siblings, an 1/17 split among to children of Patsy Vaughan. One of the plaintiffs included Samuel C. Roper in right of his wife Virginia Ann Roper, formerly Virginia Ann Vaughan, daughter of Patsy Vaughan, dec’d, formerly Patsey Chappell. Note: John Chappell m. wife #1. Their only daughter was Patsey who married [William H.] Vaughan [on 17 Mar 1813]. His first wife died. John Chappell m. 2nd to Elizabeth C. Chappell. John Chappell dies. After John Chappell dies, his son George C. Chappell dies unmarried and intestate. This case involves dividing the shares of George C. Chappell. Somewhere along the line Patsey Vaughan dies. [26]

Amelia County, Virginia Chancery Case 1841-006. William H. Chappell Et al. vs. Admr of Hiram T Chappell. See two earlier Chappell cases. In this case Hiram T. Chappell and his share was being divided. New parties include: John Johns in right of his wife Elizabeth, formerly Chappell, Brunett S. Waddill in right of his wife Frances. [27]
