Captain Thomas F. Verney, a very old identity of the port of Sydney, has just died, in his 88th year, at his residence, Goodsir street, Balmain.
Born in Warwickshire, England, Captain Verney came to New South Wales in 1840 as an apprentice on a merchant vessel, and later on entered the service of the late Mr. Robert Towns, many of whose vessels he commanded in the whaling trade.
He afterwards had charge of South Sea Island traders owned by Captain Charles Smith, and was for 10 years master of vessels in the tea trade.
Captain Verney was a master mariner for 60 years, and he had resided in Balmain for 53 years.
The remains were interred in the Church of England section of the Field of Mars Cemetery on Saturday.
