Johannes was born in 1838. He was the son of William Versfeld and Johanna Eksteen. He passed away in 1838. John left Groene Kloof at the age of 24 to manage a farm in the Caledon district. This is where he met Mary Metcalfe, fell in love and married her. According to the above story John was a dashing young man with auburn hair and Mary could not resist him. Five years into their marriage John buys the farm Langeberg on top of the Piketberg mountain.
