Dorothy Hunt, wife of Ambrose Vincent, was born in 1727. Dorothy was the sister of Michael Vincent’s wife, Ruth. When Michael Vincent of Beekman wrote his will on 15 June 1801 he left 20 pounds to his sister-in-law, wife of Ambrose. She was 100 years, 4 months old when she died according to her tombstone. She died 1 April 1827 Ghent, Columbia Co., New York.
Ambrose Vincent is found on the Beekman, Dutchess County tax lists between 1753 and 1771. By 1779, he is a taxpayer in the Claverack District of Albany (later Columbia) County. An old account book, a manuscript at the Columbia County Historical Society, marked the “Claverack Account Book," with accounts dating from 1774 to 1782, has several references to Ambrose Vincent: in 1775 and 1776, he bought gimp; in July 1776 he was paid for one days work cradling wheat, in August 1776 and 1777 he was paid for mowing grass.
Ambrose had loyalist sympathies during the revolutionary war; a warrant for his apprehension was made by the Board of Commissioners for Conspiracies. However the outcome of the hearings is not known; he remained a resident of Hillsdale.
Ambrose Vincent of the Town of Hillsdale wrote his will (Columbia County Will Book C, page 311) on 18 Feb 1805 “being of sound and perfect memory.” He bequeathed $500 to his wife Doratha in lieu of her dower and the remainder of his estate equally among all of his children:
