Biography

Jacob Vischjager died as a result of persecution during the Holocaust.

Jacob Vischjager's parents had him go into hiding early in the war. He ended up with a family in Amersfoort. The hiding mother, known as Aunt Mienke, personally made clothes for Jacob. She asked friends to give her old winter clothing so she could cut them up into children's clothes. The hiding family loved Jacob.

To avoid drawing attention to the hiding, Jacob moved every few weeks from Amersfoort to Heemstede, where Aunt Mienke's father lived, and back again.

Jacob's hiding grandfather was a tall man, almost two meters tall. In the dining room in Heemstede, there was a long table where twelve people could sit. Father sat at one end, and Jacob at the other. During a playful exchange of words, Jacob, with a raised crooked finger, said, 'Shall we fight?'

Traveling by train was dangerous. Jacob had a very dark complexion and looked like a Surinamese or Indonesian boy, which provided some protection. During the war, he even visited his sister Judic, who was in hiding in Barneveld.

In the course of 1942, Jacob's mother wanted her children back with her. It was a very emotional moment. The hiding family had a difficult time saying goodbye to their Jaapje.

Unfortunately, things did not end well for the family. [1]
