Dorothy was the younger sister of John James McCaskill's first wife Alice (who died shortly after giving birth to Malcolm George McCaskill ). After Alice's death, the Vogan family suggested her younger sister Dorothy would take care of the baby while John James worked on his farm. Approximately a year later John James and Dorothy married.
