He was born about 1752 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and was the son of Isabel(la) Margaret (Riley) and William Vogan (1725-1780).
John Vogan married on 02 Feb 1774 at the 1st Reformed Church of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania to Ruth Ann "Rudy" Griffin, [1] daughter of Elizabeth and John Griffin. They had 5 children, James, Nancy Jane, Samuel, William and John A.
He worked as a blacksmith. [2]
John founded the town of Vogansville and built the first house there in 1839. It is located near the northwestern side of Earl Township. [3]
The brothers, James, Samuel, Isaac and John Vogan served in the American Revolutionary War. John was a Private in the Pennsylvania Militia and was present at the Paoli Massacre. Later he received a war bounty for 200 acres of land. [4] [5]
By 1810 he resided at Slippery Rock, Butler County, Pennsylvania, USA. [6]
He died on 12 Jun 1812 [7] and was buried at the Vogansville Cemetery (behind the now Mennonite Church Cemetery in Earl, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA). [8]
In 1813 his estate was in the probate court of Mercer County, Pennsylvania, USA. [9]
