David was born in 1834 in Washington County, Indiana. He was a son of Moses Voyles (1834 - 1899) and Sarah (Wilson) Voyles, nickname Sallie (Wilson) Voyles (1818 - 1898). His parents, Moses and Sarah, were buried at the Big Spring Church of Christ Cemetery, Pekin, Washington County, Indiana, which was also the burial location of Gabriel Huff (1810 – 1877) and Mary “Polly” (Voyles) Huff (1813 - 1877), presumably relatives, as well as many other Huffs and numerous Voyles.
David married Susan Ann Huff on 19 Jul 1860 in Washington County, Indiana. Susan "Susie" Huff was a daughter of Washington County, Indiana, farmer and merchant Stephen Huff and his wife Elizabeth Dean.
He studied medicine under Washington County resident James B. Wilson,was a 1852 graduate of the University of Louisville Department of Medicine. He also attended the University of Louisville, graduating in 1858, after which he returned to practice medicine in Washington County, where in 1860 he married Susan Huff (1842 – 1923)
Dr. Voyles served in the Civil War in the Union Army, being attached as Assistant Surgeon to the 66th Indiana Infantry Regiment. His Civil War letters were published in 2020 as The Civil War Letters of David W. Voyles, M. D., Edited and introduced by Mary K. Marl.[1]
He passed away in 1899.
