Biography

John was born in 1832, the son of Solomon and Martha Elizabeth (McGaugh) Waggoner, in Missouri. At some point the family moved south into Wise County, Texas, and took up livestock ranching.

in 1855 John married Sarah Ann Moore in Hopkins County, Texas. They would set up housekeeping in Wise County and have the following children:

Mary Ella (Waggoner) Babb (1858–1944)

Thomas Jefferson Waggoner (1861–1943)

Martha Waggoner (1864– )

Robert Martin Waggoner (1867–1947)

John Luther Waggoner (1870–1948)

Ida L. (Waggoner) Crabtree (1874–1968)

Buena Vista (Waggoner) Walker (1876–1964)

Edgar Augustus Waggoner (1878–1922)

John continued ranching up until his death in 1900 when he passed at 68 years of age. His body is buried in what once was the Waggoner Cemetery but after the family donated the property to the county it became the Oaklawn Cemetery in Decatur, Wise County, Texas. Sarah and several other Waggoners are buried there as well.
