Biography

Martha Wakelin was born in 1874 at Croughton, Northamptonshire, England. She was the daughter of Henry Wakelin and Jane Gurden. Her birth was registered in the 2nd quarter of 1874 at Brackley, Northamptonshire.

In 1875, she emigrated to New Zealand with her parents and brother George, travelling on the ship Merope. They departed on 30 June 1875 and arrived at Timaru on 22 September 1875. She was listed as Martha Wakelin, aged 1.

Her father became a farmer at Tinwald, Canterbury.

Around 1897, she married William Drummond.

She passed away on 8 February 1943 at her residence, 23 Havelock Street, Ashburton, aged 68, suddenly. She was buried on 9 February at Ashburton Cemetery, Wesleyan plot, area 182, plot 13.
