Biography

George was born about 1817, an died in 1911.

George Walker was baptised 7 November 1817 in Brighton, Sussex [1].

The Walker Family (excerpt) [2]

"George Walker was a fine old English gentleman. He was Post Master when I went on my daily errand for the mail.

I have a mental picture of this fine old man - short in stature, a small white beard, and always kindly and courteous. As time passed on I knew he was failing, and his granddaughter came and assisted him. The original Post Office was a land mark for years, quaint was the posting box with a cut in the slab.

Today we pay tribute to the life of George Walker and his wife in memory of their life and work in service to their fellow beings. What a grand heritage they have handed down to their descendants through the generations. They were ingrained with a sense of allegiance to God, with that spirit they assisted to build the early foundations of the Church life in the small community.

Mrs. Walker opened the first school at Carroll, giving her services in a voluntary capacity. She was assisted by her daughters, Isabella, Victoria and Lucy. The old Union Church was reconstructed after the 184 flood, serving in the dual capacity of a Church and School.

A new school was erected, with a dwelling attached in which the family resided. The contractor was Michael Burke and Victoria (Mrs. Stair) was first appointed as a teacher at Gunnedah, being located at other places later. She rode on horseback , weekly boarding with Mrs. FitzGerald. Mrs. Stair died in 1942. Her husband survives her, where, at a very old age, is still residing at Carroll."

Walker-22879 and Walker-11608 appear to represent the same person because: Birth and death dates the same. Wife needs checking.
