Capt Jack Walker (born John Samuel Walker) was born in 1832 in New Albany, Indiana, a rivertown on the Ohio River. By the 1860s he had become a pilot and Captain on a packet boat (the Silas Wright) out of Reeds Landing (Minnesota) on the Mississippi River. The Silas Wright guided rafts of lumber down the Chippewa River to the Mississippi River. Capt Jack was my grandfather's grandfather.

My family knows very little about John Samuel Walker’s early life in New Albany. Who were his parents? He left and was on his own at a young age. Why? He first married Theresa Campbell before he married Elizabeth Birtch (I’ve seen Birch spelled in numerous different ways.). Theresa Campbell died very soon after the marriage. He might have acquired property in Reeds Landing from her. Anyone know of any records explaining this?

Capt Jack and Elizabeth Birtch might have had 10 children. Capt Jack's youngest child, Frank Henry Walker (born 05/26/1878), was my great-grandfather. Frank married Edith Andermann. I would love more information about her parents: Robert and Rosina Andermann.

My grandfather, Kenneth Richard Walker (born 7/25/1906) was child number 4 of 7 born to Frank Henry Walker.
