In 1891[10] Mary was a Boarder with a Miss Valentine at 4 Hunter Street, Dundee, Angus, Scotland and working in that city as a Jute Weaver.

The 1940 US Census records Mary and John living in Orange County, California, USA.[17] The townships directories record John as a wage or salary earner who was living with his son John Grant Menzies II and his wife, Gertrude May, prior to his death in 1942 and Gertrude's death in 1948.
