Biography

Ewal (born Ewel) Garfield Walker was born on June 15, 1924 in Marked Tree, Poinsett, Arkansas. He was the son of Perry C. Walker and Martha Jane White. His Southern family knew him as Garfield. Later on when he enlisted in the Army, due to an error on some paperwork, he became Ewal Garfield Walker. The story goes that when he point out this error to his Superior Officer, the response was "well, THAT's your name now. My Dad's family were farmers and sharecroppers and moved around Arkansas during his young life. They were terribly poor. My Dad had to leave grade school about grade 4/5 to help work in the cotton fields to help support the family. On April 18 1950 he married Virginia Clark in Bangor, Maine. A few weeks after they were married he was sent to Korea to fight-- they did know they were expecting. I was born on 07 April 1951, and was about 18 months old when he saw me. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps during WW2 and later re-enlisted and had a 20 year career in the Air Force. He was stationed in England during WW2 and later in Korea and Saudi Arabia. He was stationed at Loring AFB for most of his military career, but was stationed at Nourasseur AFB in Morocco, North Africa, where we lived for 3 years. He earned his GED Diploma while stationed there. He retired in 1963 with rank of SMSGT. He passed away on 9 Nov 2010 in Calais, Washington, Maine and is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Cooper, Washington, Maine. ^[1]
