Controversy in Emporia
One of the biggest stories in Emporia, Kansas was that of acting Mayor J.R. Walkup and his new bride, Minnie Wallace.
A little over a month after being married to his new bride, who was just 17 years old, J.R. Walkup died suddenly. During an autopsy and chemical analyst test, the liver and stomach of J.R. Walkup tested positive for arsenic. The new bride was accused, arrested, and tried for his supposed murder. However, during the trial, J.R. Walkup's physician came to testify that Walkup admitted to him during a visit that he had been using an arsenic mix to help with internal pains that he had been having. Then later came to visit when other symptoms appeared and asked if it could be caused by the arsenic.
Minnie Wallace Walkup was acquitted of the murder charges after a 40 hour jury deliberation. It was also announced that she married John Martin, son of Judge John Martin of Topeka, on October 24, 1885.
