Biography

Abijah Wallace was born 1748 New Canaan, Fairfield, CT; died North Salem, Westchester, New York. He was the son of James Wallace (1737-1782) and Abigail Burt (1712-1797). Abijah Wallace married Elizabeth Keeler of Wilton, Fairfield, CT 18APR1773[1]. His official military stone in the Ground reads "ABIJAH WALLACE, PVT NY MILITIA 4 REGT, REVOLUTIONARY WAR, 1748-1832. His father, Captain James Wallace, mother, and his brothers are there. With his brothers and Wallace cousins of North Salem they fought Benedict Arnold and British regulars at the Battle of Ridgefield 27 April 1777. Abijah and his brothers had carried their Colonel, Thaddeus Crane, back to North Salem with a seriously wounded leg that required amputation. There is a rock on North Salem Road known as 'Blood Rock' from where they rested the Colonel for a while. After the Revolution Abijah continued his blacksmith's trade and his home stands to this day with his outdoor blacksmith's shop still standing (it looks like a back porch). He also was a Trustee at the North Salem Academy. His wife moved to Troy, Rensselaer, NY after his death. Daughters surviving to adulthood were Deborah Wallace, widow of Tertullus Lobdell of North Salem, remarried Elnathan Smith of Ballston Spa, Saratoga, New York; Elizabeth Wallace, wife of his adopted son Lewis Ritch, Sr of Coxsackie, Greene, New York (she died there 1803); Sarah (Sallie) Wallace wife of Jeffrey Randall of Ridge, LI, New York; Lucy Wallace Hulse wife of Caleb Mapes Hulse of Coram, LI, NY. Sons surviving to adulthood were James and Uriah Wallace of Troy, Rensselaer, New York.

  1. Sarah Wallace Randall 1778–1809
  2. Lucy Ann Wallace Hulse 1780–1868
