Research Notes

James' second marriage to Nellie Wright is uncertain, but strong circumstantial evidence supports the marriage: James was born the same year as the groom in the marriage certificate, he was widowed and eligible to marry, he was living in Olathe, Kansas where his first wife passed away. An 1880 census was located in Warrensburg, Johnson County, Missouri listing James Wallace and "Nettie" Wallace.[13] James' stated age in the 1880 Census is different, but he is a Blacksmith born in Ohio. His parents' places of birth are incorrect. Nettie is the same age as Nellie. The oldest child listed on the 1880 census is Annie and her year of birth matches that of Annie, child of James and Eliza. Annie (daughter of James and Eliza)'s obituary says she "moved with her parents to Johnson County Kansas, in 1865 and to Johnson County, Missouri in 1875." (James appears as a widower in the 1870 Census in Johnson County, Kansas). James and Eliza's daughter,Bessie, was married in Warrensburg, Johnson County, Missouri in March of 1882. In the 1880 Census, Bessie was living in the household of Daniel Holden in Colorado Springs, Colorado who was a prominent rancher owning large ranches in both Warrensburg, Missouri and in Colorado. Lastly, a family history written by his great grandson John Horton, it is stated "Someone who knew the family happened upon him working in a blacksmith shop in Kansas." It appears that Hattie and Harry Wallace in the 1880 census may have been the children of Nellie Wright and James adopted them, formally or informally. I have tried to track down Hattie and Harry, but without any definitive success.
