In the township of Whitchurch, County of York, at age 49, according to the 1861 Census of Canada, William "Wallis" was a saddler and harness maker.
William was a hospital volunteer during the 1847 typhus epidemic, contracted the disease, but recovered.
Newmarket incorporated in 1857, William was one of the original councillors. The source book also mentions the Wallis Tannery located in the Wallis Block, indicating he was a successful business man but a fire in 1862 destroyed the business.
