She was wrecked with her brothers (and their families) on the ship Minerva.
Elizabeth Walsh was born in Stockport, Cheshire in 1826, the daughter of a surgeon.
The family left from Didsbury, embarking on the ship Unicorn (946 tons), which sailed from Liverpool 13 Jun 1850 with 257 emigrants. The Unicorn arrived in Durban on the 19 September 1850. It could not get over the bar into Durban harbour and the passengers were rowed ashore and then carried through the waves. David Sparks was helping the passengers ashore and hence the romantic story that he carried Elizabeth Walsh ashore through the waves. Be that as it may they were married two months later by Archdeacon Lloyd, the Anglican chaplain, which means they were probably married at St Paul’s Church. My Grandmother told me that Elizabeth was reputedly delicate, which was why the family emigrated from the English climate. However, she must have been tough, because she and David had eleven children, all of who lived into middle age.
If she married in 1850 and had eleven children, she couldn't have died in 1855, as originally entered in the profile.
