Biography

Fanny Maria Want was born on 9 April 1866 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.^[1][2] She was the eldest child of James Want and Fanny Lee Smith.^[3]

The 1871 England Census shows "F. M. Want", age 4, living with her parents and 2-year-old sister at 93 Icknield(?) Street in the Ladywood district of Birmingham.^[4] Her father, James, is listed as a Harness Maker, and her mother, Fanny, is listed as a Paper Box Maker. Sadly, her father passed away 2 years later.

The 1881 England Census shows a 14-year-old Fanny Want living with her widowed mother and three sisters on Howard Street in the St. George district of Birmingham.^[5] Also in the household are a lodger named Anne Lee and two other Want children (possibly cousins - see notes).

On 16 May 1887, Fanny married Harry Edwin Bailey.^[6] Soon afterwards, the couple migrated to the United States and settled in Salt Lake City, Utah, where their first child was born in 1889.^[7]

Fanny Maria Bailey, nee Want, died on 29 April 1921.^[1] She is buried with her husband in Salt Lake City Cemetery.^[11]

Research Notes

According to various census records, her arrival in America is estimated to be around 1888. Haven't pinpointed it yet, but these records are possibilities: Fanny Bailey on the 'Wyoming' and Fanny Bailey on the 'Wisconsin' - Freeth-52 20:42, 7 June 2017 (EDT)
