James was born in 1880. He was the son of George Wardle and Catherine Buckberrough. When his father George Wardle became involved in the business of building barns, his son, James took over the business of moving buildings, beginning when he was only 16 years old. The first wheels used in moving buildings were made of logs sawed off, about 8 or 10 inches wide. Jim Wardle received a maximum of $12.50 a day for moving buildings. This involved 8 to 10 hours of work a day, using his own equipment. The owners of the buildings being moved had to hire the help and power to move the buildings. Jim would take the democrat and all he could carry in it, but all heavy equipment was picked up and returned when the job was completed.
When Jim and Jenny bought the farm in 1917 they paid $2,850.00 for it. To pay for it they sold their house where Lloyd Smith now resides for $2,200.00, and borrowed $500.00 from his sister Florence.
James and Jenny Wardle had one son, Garfield, who inherited the farm after the death of his father. Jenny (Neu/New) Wardle was born in 1880 in Middleton Township. She was the daughter of Jacob and Caroline Neu, who emigrated to Canada from their native country, Germany, she died in 1970 at the age of 90 years. Her husband, James, died of a stroke in January 1939, at he age of 59. He had just previously suffered a severe shock and damage to his hand from picking up a fallen electric wire during an ice storm.[1]
