Biography

findagrave.com # 23616828

Buried: Mansfield Cemetery, Blue Ridge Twp., Mansfield, Piatt, Illinois

NOTE*[tombstone engraving of 1846 birthyear is in error. He was born in 1864. He was only 16 years old in the 1880 census, and six yrs old in 1870 census]

Cause of Death: Arterial Sclerosis & Senility (recorded by undertaker).

Important to note though that just 1 week before death, he fell into a freshly dug manhole and suffered head injury. The death certi. reports of a slight abrasion right cheek from a fall Sept. 3 1938

Injury is recorded in Mansfield village records. Inquiry was held to investigate; Death cert. states that not caused by the fall. {Family members ie: [grandchildren] disagrees with findings. John H. McNutt was coroner at time of Eli's death.

From Eli's grandchildren we learned: He always rose early in the morning before daylight and would sit around and wait for daylight to come. He drank his coffee from a saucer. Eli was a known Tinker man and fixed watches, etc. He also fashioned coffins, & violins and made furniture out of his own shop. Both he and Nannie played a violin. About a week before Eli "Bud" Warren died he had fallen and suffered a head injury. He had walked home from downtown one evening. Near the sidewalk was a rather freshly dug ditch and manhole. Eli was known to like to drink. It was told that he was inebriated the night he was walking home when he stumbled and fell in an uncovered manhole- hitting his head hard. His Neice reports that she remembers it made him out of his mind. Nannie took care of him in bed. He smoked a pipe and his last words were for his pipe of which he took a couple of draws from before he died.

His great-granddaughter, Anita (Baugh) Razor writes in April 2001: When I talked to dad, (Carlos) last night I told him about your e-mail. He said grandpa Bud (Eli) didn't let anyone into his work shed but dad followed him there one day and was allowed in a few times after that. He said that Eli worked on guns, clocks and other small mechanical things as well as some woodworking. My dad must have been very good to have been allowed to stay. My dad also works on small engines, clocks, etc. as a hobby still yet. Dads family always called Eli "Grandpa Bud" and it took me forever to track down this side of the family because dad didn't know his given first name.
