Biography

Connecticut Colony

  • From John Maltby:
Ebenezer Washburn and Patience Miles had 15 children, including:

Stephen Washburn, fourth son, born in New Milford, CT, on 19 Feb. 1734/5,[1] married Martha (___) in say ca. 1759,[2] and they moved to Manchester, Bennington Co., VT, in ca. 1760. She was born, say ca. 1739, and they were living in Manchester, VT, in the 1791 federal census.[3] He purchased land in Glastonbury, Bennington Co., VT, in 1791, and sold it in 1794.[4] He supposedly died in 1799 in Lansdowne, Ontario,[5] and she died on 4 May 1813 in Lansdowne, Ontario,[6] and they were both buried in the Washburn Family Cemetery in Washburns Corners, Leeds and Grenville Co., Ontario.

Stephen and Martha Washburn supposedly had children, order uncertain:
  • Tabor Washburn, born ca. 1760 in Bennington Co., VT,[86] married Sarah (___), and they lived in Dorsett and Manchester, Bennington Co., VT.
  • Aaron Washburn, born say 1762 in Bennington Co., VT, marriage not found.
  • (Possibly) Patience Washburn, born, say ca. 1764 in VT, married William Parish, son of Asa and Mindwell (Fuller) Parish, on 1 or 25 Nov. 1784 in Manchester, Bennington Co., VT.
  • Rebekah Washburn, born on 8 Mar. 1766, presumably in VT, married Daniel Hilyard/Hilliard, son of John and Elizabeth (Smith) Hilyard, on 17 Aug. 1786 in Manchester, Bennington Co., VT.
  • Stephen Washburn (Jr.), born on 7 Feb. 1770 in Manchester, Bennington Co., VT, married supposedly 1.) Martha Bull in ca. 1791, and 2.) Patty Emmons, daughter of Solomon and Mary (Marsh) Emmons, on 7 Jan. 1801 in Hartland, VT, and 3.) Arsenath Sexton, daughter of William and Dorothy (Curtis) Sexton, of Athens, Leeds Co., Ontario, in ca. 1803 in Leeds Co., Ontario.
  • Martha Washburn, born on 15 Mar. 1776 in Manchester, VT, supposedly married Henry Purdy, and moved to Schuyler Falls, Clinton Co., NY.
  • Polly Washburn, born on 10 Sept. 1778 in Manchester, VT, marriage not found.
  • Ebenezer Washburn, born on 6 Dec. 1780 in Manchester, VT, supposedly married Hannah Sexton, daughter of William and Dorothy (Curtis) Sexton, in ca. 1806 in Lansdowne, Ontario.

Upper Canada Land Petition

A “Stephen Washbern” filed a land petition on May 11, 1796 with the Upper Canada Land Board requesting that he be assigned a 1,000 acre parcel in Bastard Township (near Lansdowne, Upper Canada).[7]

A letter with respect to this land grant states that Stephen Washburn claimed the parcel from "Stephen Washburn, the Elder".[8] Accordingly, the Stephen Washburn who filed the land petition was Stephen Sr. and not Stephen Jr., indicating that Stephen Sr. had almost certainly immigrated to Upper Canada before his death.

Notes

Possible Second marriage location: Kent, Litchfield Co., Connecticut or Dutchess Co., New York

He died after 1798, abt 1804 Kent,, Conn.

  2. Her maiden name is listed as Tabor in the I.G.I. Marriage Records, presumably from LDS temple records, but it is only a guess, because of the naming of a son “Tabor” Washburn, and most researchers of this Washburn line believe that name is incorrect. The marriage year was calculated from the approximate birth year of Tabor Washburn in circa 1760.
