Identity of Wife

The wife of Ephraim Waters was Grace Butterfield daughter of Joseph Butterfield and Lydia Ballard. This can be demonstrated by the probate record of Joseph Butterfield. Joseph died in 1720 and the inventory of his estate was made 2 December 1720, but the distribution from the estate was not made until 1728. This occurred on petition of Simon Thompson and Ephraim Waters who were the "husbands to two of the deceased's daughters." Simon Thompson was the spouse of Annah/Hannah Butterfield and as the spouse of Ephraim Waters is Grace, she may be assumed to be Grace Butterfield.^[1]

Biography

Ephraim Waters, son of Samuel Waters and Mary Hudson, was born 12 Oct 1687 in Woburn, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.^[2]

He married about 1712 Grace ____, [Date based on the birth date of daughter Lydia.]

In 1720, his father deeded him the east end of the house, the east end of the barn and half of all the land,^[3] probably on condition that Ephraim care for them in their old age.

He died prior to 1762. His death is not recorded in the town records.

In 1762 an agreement was made between widow Grace and daughters Lydia Flagg (wife of Gershom Flagg) and Abigail Jones (wife of Joshua Jones) that daughters would hold entire estate in equal shares forever.^[4]
