Biography

Born by about 1501, Thomas Waterton was the son of Robert Waterton of Walton and Sandal in Yorkshire and his wife, Muriel Leeke. By 1526 he had married Joan, daughter of Sir Richard Tempest of Bracewell and Bowling, Yorkshire and his wife, Rosamund Bolling. Together they had five sons and seven daughters.

Richard Tempest backed Thomas' claim to the wardship of Edward Percy, son of Josceline Percy and grandson of Henry Percy, Earl of Northumberland. The very young Edward Percy was married to Thomas' daughter, Elizabeth.

Thomas was retruned to Parliament in 1542 as Member for Yorkshire and in the same year he was granted the wardship of Thomas Pilkington whom he married to another of his daughters, Rosamund. In May 1544 while serving in the Scottish campaign Thomas was knighted at Leith by the Earl of Hertford. [1]

Joan Waterton was dead by 1549 when Thomas married Agnes, widow of Edward Restwold, and daughter of John Cheney. There were no children from this marriage. [2]

Thomas Waterton died on 28 July 1588. [1][3]
