Biography

Theophilus William Watts was born in about 1824, in Halifax, Nova Scotia Colony.^[1] He was the son of Theophilus Watts and Ann Dorothy Crosskill. He may have been given the middle name of "William" to honor William Letson, who had stood surety for Theophilus on his Marriage Bond.^[2]

Note regarding birth: The date of birth is a calculation from the date of his death (9 Nov 1888) and the age (64) recorded on the registry entry for his death. Since his parents were married in July of 1823, a birth year of 1824 seems reasonable. No documentary evidence for his birth or parentage has yet been located.

Theophilus Watts, a resident of Dorchester in Ontario married Susannah Dickey of Nissourie on 20 Jun 1847. The witnesses to the marriage were David Dickey and Nicholas Walton (probably Theophilus's step-father).^[3]

The 1871 Census of Canada lists the following children at the home of William Watts (age 46, a farmer, born in Nova Scotia, of English heritage)^[4] and Susanna Watts (age 39, born in New Brunswick, of Irish heritage)^[5] in East Middlesex, London Township, Province of Ontario:^[6]
