Biography

Nancy Weatherstone was born about 1850. She was the daughter of Samuel George Weatherstone and Letitia (Doherty) Weatherstone. [1]

Anne Nancy Weatherstone married Charles Adams in 1867 at Grafton, New South Wales, Australia. [2]

There is evidence that Nancy Adams never married William Burrows but resided with him as husband and wife. She was charged with false registration of children.

http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article61242970 Making False Statements.

Nancy Adams was summoned by the District Registrar, under direction of the Registrar General, on three separate charges of making false statements in registering births. Mr. M'Guren appeared for accused. Proceedings were taken last week under the 34th section of the Registration Act, and an objection to the effect that this section was repealed, the Bench held to be fatal to the prosecution. Informations were then laid under the 297th section of tho Criminal Law Amendment Act

The evidence in the first case wherein accused was charged with making a statement to the effect that her child Alfred Clarence, was the son of Charles Adams, whereas in truth he was not, was similar to that given last week, showing that accused was married to Adams, but they parted some time before the birth of the child referred to. At the time accused registered the child and since she cohabited with a man named Burrowes as his wife. Evidence was given for the prosecution by William Clarke, District Registrar, Senior Sergeant M'Cormack, and Senior-constable Cowle.

No evidence was given for the defence, and accused was committed to take her trial at the next Quarter Sessions. Bail allowed - herself in £10, and two sureties of £10 each.

The other cases were slightly different. The informations charged accused with having (on different dates) made false declarations in connection with the registration of the birth of two of her children, James Richard and Ivy Elizabeth, that is to say that they were the legitimate offspring of William Burrowes, to whom she was married on October 22nd, 1875, at Grafton, whereas she was not married as stated.

The register was produced in evidence showing the entries alleged to contain the false statements. Accused there gave her name as Nancy Burrowes, formerly Weatherstone. The District Registrar deposed to making careful and diligent search in the register of marriages for this district, but there is no entry showing marriage between William Burrowes and Nancy Adams.

Accused reserved her defence and was committed on the whole three charges.

Fortunately the Crown did not press for a heavy penalty and Nancy was sentenced at 12.35PM to be imprisoned till 4PM. http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article61243117
