Biography

The son of Jacob Weatherwax and Annis (Ketchum) Weatherwax, George was born in Peru in 1822. His father moved the family west to Michigan around 1837. In 1850, George and his younger brother, Benjamin worked as farm laborers, boarding with blacksmith Henry Chris in Tallmadge Township, Michigan, in Ottawa County.[1] George married Margaret Huldah Van Tassel (1838-), the daughter of Mathias and Jane Van Tassel, in Ottawa County on November 21, 1852.[2]They made their home in Georgetown Township, a few houses down from his brother Benjamin, who had also married, and where George owned and operated a sawmill.[3] George's and Huldah's children included:

  1. Frank E. Weatherwax (1856-1942)
  2. Clarissa M. Weatherwax (1857-1868)
  3. Abigail Weatherwax (1860-)
  4. Leon Weatherwax (1860-1942)
  5. Adele C. Weatherwax (1867-1909)
Captain George Weatherwax served in the United States Civil War.

George enlisted in the 3rd Michigan Infantry, serving as a Captain with Company I. [4]The 3rd Michigan left Grand Rapids on June 13, 1861 and arrived in Washington, DC on June 16. They were engaged in covering the federal retreat from Bull Run, Virginia, on July 21st. George resigned on October 19, 1861 due to disability.[5] In June of 1863, both George and Benjamin registered for the draft; George enlisted but Benjamin did not.[6]

George's brother, Benjamin was killed in action while his company attempted to burn the Watauga Bridge in Carter County, Tennessee. George's wife, Huldah, passed away and with eight minor children between them, George married Benjamin's widow, Mary Abigail Taylor, marrying in 1870. George's father and siblings went west to Washington state around 1887, and George and his family migrated, as well, setting in Grays Harbor to farm.[7] George began receiving his disability pension in 1906[8] and in 1908, he passed away; he was 86.[9] He is buried with his family at Fern Hill Cemetery in Aberdeen, Washington.[10]
