Military Service

Cornelius served in the US Army as a private on November 14, 1901, when he was 18 years old. The information below is compiled from several military records.^[1][2]

Cornelius enlisted in the US Army as a private on November 14, 1901, and was discharged on November 13, 1904, serving for a total of three years. Cornelius was assigned to Company M, 9th Infantry, and transferred to Company I, 2nd Infantry in April 1902. He served during the period of the Philippine–American War (1899–1902).

Cornelius was described as having brown hair, brown eyes, a fair complexion, and 5' 8" tall. He listed his occupation as laborer.

When he enlisted, Cornelius was living in Jonesboro, Arkansas. His birthdate was entered as January 15, 1883.

Marriage

Cornelius married Letha Tolbert on 9 Feb 1905 in Craighead, Arkansas. Cornelius was 22 years old and Letha was 19.^[3][4]

Residences / Family

In 1910, Cornelius (28) was living in Nettleton, Craighead County, Arkansas with his wife, Leatha (22); their children, Eleitus (3), and Cecil (1); and Goesie Webb (7, niece), and Zelma Webb (5, niece). ^[5]

In the 1940 census, Cornelius (age 58) was the widowed head of household in Jonesboro, Craighead, Arkansas. Living with him were his son Clarence (27), Clarence's wife Rose (32), and son Jerry Root (13).^[8]

Death / Burial

Cornelius, son of Elizabeth White, died at the age of 71 on May 26, 1953, in Little Rock, Pulaski, Arkansas.^[10] He was buried in Pinecrest Memorial Park and Garden Mausoleum, Alexander, Saline County, Arkansas.^[11]
