Biography

It has been assumed by many genealogists that this Susan Weeks was born c. 1766 in or near Bristol, but this is questionable given that her last child (John) was born in 1819, which would have made her 53 years old, which though not impossible is extremely unlikely.

On the other hand, Susannah had married James Wiltshire as far back as 1787, the same year that their first son Thomas was baptised, meaning that this couple were having children for over 30 years.

James and Susannah appear on the 1841 census, him aged 75 (1766), her 60 (1781), implying a birth date between June 1775 to June 1781. The census also indicates that Susannah had been born outside Gloucestershire.

Susannah Wiltshire died, supposedly aged 71 years on the 19th of July 1848 at Longwell Green.[1] This would imply a birth year of c.1777.

Looking for Susannah Weeks baptisms between 1775-1781, the only one I can find which is reasonably close to Bristol was the 26th Nov 1775 baptism of Susannah Weeks in Cheddar, Somerset, daughter of Thomas Weeks and Ann (Coombs).

Cheddar is close to Bristol and more importantly this Susannah Weeks matches all of the above details. She is presumably born after Jun 1775 outside of Gloucestershire.

This of course raises the concern that Susannah Weeks was married to James Wiltshire on the 16th of April 1787, at the age of only 11 years. Unusual as this may be, there appears to be no other way of reconciling these facts.
