Biography

Margaret, fourth daughter of Henry and Hulda, followed her two older sisters, Joyce and Jessie, into nursing as a career. She trained at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, after which she became a ward sister at the Renmark District Hospital.

She did not, however, follow her sisters into the Army, but worked for some years on the nursing staff near Woomera, north of Adelaide.

In 1951, she became Matron in charge of the Stirling Hospital in the Adelaide Hills, a position she held until 1959, when she married Leonard West.

They had no children. Margaret, known as Gwen and Len lived in the Adelaide suburb of Seaton, where a number of Weidenhofer relatives also lived.

Gwen became ill in 1975 and her husband Len, nursed her in their home for nine years before she died at the Western Community Hospital on 13 May, 1984, aged 63.

Len continued to live in their home at Seaton until he died in 1995, aged 75. They are both buried at Centennial Park Cemetery.
